Local residents, campaigners and political leaders will come together on Saturday 24 January 2026 to demand urgent action to reopen Hammersmith Bridge to vehicles. The Bridge is a vital river crossing whose prolonged closure continues to disrupt daily life for thousands of people.
The Hammersmith Bridge Action Event, taking place at 2.00pm at the Barnes end of the Bridge, will be led by Putney MP Fleur Anderson, alongside the Leader of Wandsworth Council, Simon Hogg and Leonie Cooper, Member of the London Assembly for Merton and Wandsworth. The event will underline the strength of local feeling and the growing frustration at years of delay.
Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to vehicles for almost 7 years, cutting off a key transport link across the Thames and forcing traffic onto already overcrowded roads. The knock-on effects have been severe: worsening congestion in Putney and Roehampton, increased road safety risks for cyclists and pedestrians, longer and less reliable journeys, disrupted bus routes, and Roehampton effectively cut off. For many residents, the closure has split families, harmed businesses and made everyday life more difficult.
Fleur Anderson MP said:
“Hammersmith Bridge is critical infrastructure, not a side issue. Its closure is putting unsafe levels of traffic onto surrounding roads, damaging our local economy, and disrupting lives day in, day out.
“There is genuine hope that funding to reopen the Bridge could be secured, but only if this issue stays firmly on the agenda. This action event is about showing that our community is united, determined and unwilling to tolerate endless delay.”
Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, said:
“The continued closure of Hammersmith Bridge is causing real harm to residents and businesses across Wandsworth and beyond. Reopening it is essential for improving safety, easing congestion and reconnecting communities on both sides of the river. We need urgent action, not more promises.”
Residents are encouraged to attend, bring friends, neighbours and family, and help demonstrate the overwhelming public support for reopening Hammersmith Bridge as soon as possible.
