Scrappage scheme expansion

The Government should step forward with funding for a scrappage scheme for London and the surrounding areas. The government has supported clean air zones and provided cash for scrappage in Bristol, Bath, Sheffield, Birmingham, Portsmouth and other areas across the country – but has not yet given London or the home counties any similar funding.

Despite this, I am glad the Mayor has introduced the biggest scrappage scheme yet – £110m – to provide financial assistance to help eligible Londoners receiving Child Benefit, or certain low income or disability benefits, scrap non-compliant cars, motorcycles and wheelchair accessible vehicles to prepare for the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) from 29 August 2023.

ULEZ Expansion

I welcome news by the Mayor of London that as part of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expansion he is introducing a scrappage scheme to support residents on lower incomes, as well as businesses and charities. This is the biggest scrappage scheme yet – of £100 million, which will help those in Putney who are on low incomes and those who need support to replace or retrofit their cars if they are not compliant.

Additionally, I am pleased the Mayor has introduced new grace periods for disabled people, allowing more time to adapt to change. The announcement this month will make sure the most vulnerable in our communities are looked after and given the support they need as the ULEZ expands and we make the change to low-emission cars to clean up our air quality and take climate action.

You can find out more about the ULEZ expansion including ULEZ standards and scrappage scheme information here.
