Residents of the Alton Estate have voted overwhelmingly in favour of regeneration plans in the biggest regeneration ballot of its kind.

This decisive ‘YES’ with 82.4% voting in favour is a clear mandate from the Alton community and guarantees long-awaited investment: new council homes, a modern shopping parade with supermarket, and a new family hub with a GP surgery and nursery.

Fleur Anderson MP said:

“This is fantastic news for our community. Alton residents have waited far too long for the investment they deserve, and I am delighted that they have now had their say and backed these plans so strongly.

The ‘YES’ vote is a clear message that people want change — new homes, better health facilities, modern community spaces and a revitalised shopping parade.

Over recent weeks I have been out on the Alton, knocking on doors, talking to residents and supporting the campaign for a ‘YES’ vote. I know how much this means to local people and I am proud to have stood alongside them in securing this result. This is a huge step forward!”

The Alton has been overlooked for too long, with overcrowded homes, neglected community centres and widening health inequalities.

For years, Fleur campaigned for change. Before becoming MP, she ran a community centre and helped secure funding for a community worker during COVID who brought groups together, from the Youth Base and Men’s Shed to the Over 50s Lunch Club and Chantelle’s Kitchen.

Now, that long fight has paid off. The regeneration will be managed in stages, delivering hundreds of new, high-quality homes, so families can stay in their community.

A new supermarket and modern shopping parade will restore a vibrant heart to the estate, while the very first new building will be a community centre with a library, flexible spaces and a dedicated youth hub.

Downshire Fields and the Alton Activity Centre will be upgraded with new playgrounds, safer paths and green landscaping. Focus Hall will be renovated, creating improved spaces for local groups and residents.
