Secondly, as you may have seen before – I have written to the new Secretary of State, Michael Gove, demanding he gets a grip on the cladding crisis. You can read my letter in full here:

Please do take the time to read it. During our latest exchange in the Commons, Mr Gove said that he will shortly be updating the House on a series of measures that he, quote, “hopes will help bring some relief” to leaseholders facing costs and he said he will do this before Christmas. He said that this will be in addition to the Building Safety Bill. The clock is ticking, and so I await his announcement with anticipation.

Rather than yet another betrayal of their promises to leaseholders, we need legal protections to ensure that millions of pounds of building safety remediation costs are not passed on to innocent homeowners and tenants. This is what the Government has repeatedly promised, and Labour is working cross-party to fight for these protections to be included in the Building Safety Bill.

On the Building Safety Bill, the Bill has now finished it’s Committee stage and the next step is the report stage in the House of Commons which is expected to be early next year. To the best of my knowledge, the Bill did not change much in Committee Stage (at least not to the extent that we need it to change to protect leaseholders) but there is a consensus that the best chance of protecting leaseholders from the costs of historic fire safety defects is to support new clauses 5, 6 and 13 (each tabled by Stephen McPartland and Royston Smith). So I have added my name to each of these new clauses.

Labour has also tabled our own amendment which would establish a Building Works Agency as we have been proposing for many months now.
 
The final bit of news is that I held a meeting with Lord Stephen Greenhalgh, the Building Safety Minister, and some excellent representatives from four buildings in our constituency who have been badly affected by the cladding scandal. We had a very productive meeting.  The four residents were able to raise with the Government directly the issues many of you have been facing. The Minister’s response was positive and receptive and I will be continuing to follow up with him to ensure the actions we discussed are taken forward.

Since my last update, more affected blocks have reached out to me – adding to the list of nearly 30 blocks locally – and I am doing what I can to ensure every block who asks for my intervention gets some support.
